Friday Night Blogging

Wow possums, it's been over a month. And I know you've missed me, so ... updates!
Fun-employment is over, yay! I've recently started a new (temp) job at Next Street, a merchant bank for inner-city small businesses (Google it). It's only been two weeks, but I'm really enjoying it so far. I've been learning a lot, mostly on my own. For example, to do one of my tasks, I had to learn very basic HTML. And best of all, I really feel like I'm making a difference, which for a temporary, entry-level, private-sector job is saying something. Sadly, I don't think I'm qualified for the permanent position, but I haven't given up hope yet. There's still one more DC fellowship to hear back from and maybe a fall campaign job (and then maybe a staff job), so the employment front is a lot brighter.

Insert Witticism Here

So I noticed I hadn't blogged in a while and ultimately, I can't blame it on busyness, only laziness. How sad, but I do have some updates.
  • I'm going to Madrid this weekend for their pride week finale. I hope I'm not too disappointed considering last year, Madrid was host of EuroPride and close to a million people showed up. This trip will also be my first one out of Barcelona and a chance to hang out with friends from last summer!
  • Hopefully on this trip I'll be able to rein in my tendency towards getting fucked-up-drunk. Not to go into too many details, but I had an episode of drunkeness last week and ended up needing medical attention. But the bright side was I fell in love with socialized health-care.
  • Tomorrow the consulate is celebrating the 4th of July and I'm getting paid 100 freakin' euros to serve pizza.
  • Speaking of work, I recently moved to my new office; basically it's a big room divided between two sections by a wall of filing cabinets. The worst part, my chair sucks and hurts my bum. But my boss is leaving to NYC for two weeks soon and I'm getting some real responsibility. Not sure how I feel about it yet.
  • ...And, my job comes with impressive perks. Like free tickets to a concert held in the Palau de la Música Catalana, the inside of which was breathtakingly beautiful. The music (an arrangement of military-themed pieces to celebrate a Spanish victory over Napoleon), not so much.
Oh, and of course, the Spanish are the champions of Europe.

My favorite pic is where they're throwing their coach (who's like 80) in the air.

And while I'm pretty much in love with all the team, my new goal in life is to get the goalie, Iker Casillas, to marry me (cuz it's legal in Spain).

Yes, Spain, the perennial under-achievers, defeated Germany and the country went nuts. The major squares in all the big cities became scenes of revelry on a Sunday night. In the Plaça Catalunya, there was mayhem, but it was very exciting, especially because the Catalans have tried for 300 years to forge an identity separate from Spain. The rivalry between Barça and Real Madrid has always been seen as an expression of this thirst for separateness. I like my Spain whole, so it was very heartening to see not one Catalan flag in my brief walk around the plaza.

But enough about politics. It was a joyous night that I was lucky to be part of, as could definitely be said about my entire time here.

San Diego!

So I went to San Diego this past weekend. What. A. Blast!

Between the beaches, the wild animal park, Roger and his amazing friends, and my amazing friends, (plus a lot of happy drink), this was one of the best experiences of my life. Even though I probably should have been more financially circumspect, I don't have any regrets. I would so live there one day; it's probably the most beautiful city I've visited.

Some good news made it even better. I'm going to Barcelona for sure this summer! Spain, here I come (again). And Bill Richardson (my governor) endorsed Barack Obama, yays! So basically, life is pretty swell right now. Not perfect, I do miss all my friends, from Harvard, from FCCLA, from Madrid, and everywhere else I've been. And I do need a job. But, otherwise, I'm in a happy place.

Have fun and safe spring breaks everyone!

An Inauguration, Christening, or Whatever

Welcome friends, to my second attempt at blogging. I'm sure you're all quivering with anticipation, eager to find out just what exactly I've been doing with myself in the last six weeks since I left Harvard.

The answer: Absolutely nothing! That's right, my days have been mostly made-up of sitting for hours in the local college's library to use their Wi-Fi. And those are the days I actually wake up earlier than 2 or 3 in the afternoon and get my lazy ass out of the house. 6 weeks and I can almost count the number of places I've been on one hand. True, I could spout a lot of excuses (I have to share a car with my sis, there's not a lot of places to go in small-town New Mexico, etc.) But ultimately, I have to 'fess up and say that I haven't done much of anything because I'm still afflicted with what convinced me to take a break from fair Harvard; apathy and lethargy, perhaps mixed with a very small dose of depression. The irony is that I wanted to get away from that place so I could work on all that, put my days of really stupid procrastination behind me.

So, although every bit of common sense, my family, and my bank account tell me that I need to get my act together, get of the house, find a job, and get some semblance of a life for the next three months I'll be here, I simply don't wanna. And that's sad, very sad. So until my half-assed attempts at self-therapy or a stern lecture from my mother (which hasn't happened since I was, like, 6) persuade me do such a thing, I suppose I'll continue wasting my days away with TV, computer games, and books. Fabulous! (B-t-dubs, primary-mania has me hooked on CNN and MSNBC, the gov-geek inside of me is dying of happiness.)

Anywho, to all my triple-b buddies and other Harvard friends who may be reading this, I miss you terribly. Although I was hoping to come visit for pre-frosh weekend, the lack of a job (and hence, dinero) has put that plan into jeopardy. So, even though I might not see most of you until September, here's to our reunion being that much sweeter.

Peace and love!
